Your personal drivers

My grandfather set my personal compass early. From him I gathered at a young age the art of self-reliance and work ethic.

Then it was Lord Baden Powell, Ernest Thompson Seton, and Daniel Carter Beard. A military officer, an artist, write, naturalist, and a backwoodsman. The Scouting handbook was my guide through manhood. I remember quite well standing at attention in my self-pressed uniform, proudly repeating the twelve points of the Scout Law. A Scout is: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. I lived closely by these twelve points in my youth as well as today.

The meeting and studying with Stephen Covey cause an awaking in my sense of direction. I went to one of his seminars on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Stephen being a Scout himself pulled from his front pocket an old and well-used compass. He asked the audience to stand. He instructed everyone to close his or her eyes and point North. After a few moments, he spoke saying to open your eyes and see. There were people pointing in many directions and only a few of us pointing north. A skill learned long ago as a young Scout. When everyone had sat back down with the laughter and good-natured poking of fun, Steven clearly pointed out that when you are not intentional of your surroundings, it is hard to be intentional about living your life.

Since that time, I have had many corrections to my magnetic north always correcting to my personal true north. To know your true north you must know what your non-negotiables are. What you will and will not do, stand for, be. The map you leave for others to follow is the legacy of living the best life you can.
